Together for a Period-Friendly World.

Every year on May 28th, the world pauses to reflect on a truth too many girls and women still live every day that access to safe, dignified menstrual hygiene is not a privilege. It is a right.

This year, Mercy’s Future Foundation, in collaboration with the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Assembly, is proud to host a landmark Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration right here in our community. The event takes place on 28th May, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM at the District Assembly Hall.

Under the global theme “Together for a Period-Friendly World,” this gathering is a call to action for policymakers, community leaders, parents, young people, and organizations to unite in breaking down the stigma, silence, and inequality that surrounds menstruation.

“When a girl misses school because of her period, we lose more than a school day we lose a future. Together, we can change that.”

Why This Day Matters

Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed globally every year on May 28th a date chosen deliberately: menstruation lasts an average of 5 days, and the menstrual cycle averages 28 days. But beyond the symbolism, the day exists because millions of girls across Africa and the world still lack access to sanitary products, clean water, and safe spaces to manage their periods.

In Ghana, menstruation remains a leading cause of school absenteeism among girls. Shame, misinformation, and poverty combine to push young women out of classrooms and away from opportunities. Mercy’s Future Foundation has spent years working to reverse this reality through distribution of sanitary supplies, education, and community engagement, and this event is a continuation of that mission.

Distinguished Guests & Speakers

The event will be graced by two remarkable women who represent the intersection of leadership, service, and advocacy:

Hon. Olivia Bentil – District Chief Executive, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa

A champion of community development and girls’ welfare, Hon. Bentil brings the power of local government to this vital conversation.

Ms. Mercy Acquah – Founder, Mercy’s Future Foundation

Driven by a deep personal commitment to women and girls, Ms. Acquah founded MFF to ensure no girl’s future is held back by her biology.

What to Expect

Attendees can look forward to a morning of powerful conversations, community solidarity, and practical action. The programme will include educational talks on menstrual health and hygiene, open dialogue to break the silence around periods, and sharing of resources with girls and women in the community.

This is more than an event it is a movement. When communities openly discuss menstruation, they dismantle shame. When institutions invest in menstrual health, they invest in education, productivity, and gender equality. Mercy’s Future Foundation invites every member of the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa community to be part of this change.
